I too have only had indoor/outdoor cats. Ultimately though, it hasn't worked out well for most of them, but it comes down to a matter of philosophy - would they rather be bored and live a long life inside, or enjoy the moment with a shorter lifespan? (Three of the cats never came back, one almost certainly to foul play on Halloween, though hopefully the other two simply relocated themselves, and one sustained an injury that impacted his quality of life for the next few years, until he ended up dying of liver failure.)

Guts' previous rennie human was a tent dweller, so he was raised pretty much outdoor only, but he has taken to the indoors pretty well. And in Arizona he disliked the local floral so much that he almost never went outside at all! Which I was perfectly fine with, because I didn't want him outside at night anyway, lest he be eaten by a coyote. I hope that installing cat shelves will increase his indoor time a bit.
